Chairman’s Message - November 2006
Welcome to another year of Stanford Rugby. Thanks to the support of Stanford alumni, parents, friends, and the athletic department, Stanford Rugby is growing stronger every year. Last season saw the Stanford Women win their second straight National Championship with an exciting brand of running rugby, including the winning score on the last play of the game! The Stanford Men’s team also played an exciting brand of rugby and will challenge for the playoffs this year. Both teams are looking forward to this season as many key players are returning, and a number of promising new players are joining the teams.
Stanford enjoys the best rugby facility in the United States and we anticipate we will once again host the National Collegiate Championship tournament in early May, 2007. This past year also saw the United States National Team play several matches at Stanford. There will be many great rugby events at Steuber Field and in the Doyle Family clubhouse this season (December – May, 2007) and you are invited to attend and enjoy as many as you can. Please check this website for the Men’s and Women’s schedules. We look forward to seeing you at Stanford.
Stanford Men’s Rugby is celebrating its 100th year, and Stanford Women’s Rugby is enjoying its 30th anniversary as well. We are proud of Stanford’s rugby tradition and hope will join us in celebrating the tradition of Stanford Rugby at our celebration banquet on December 2, and throughout the season thereafter. Of course, one important way to help our celebration is to make a donation to the Stanford Rugby Foundation’s endowment, which funds the coaches for both teams, game transportation and trainers. You can also join the Stanford First XV and contribute to the annual Rugby Improvement Fund, which pays for many of the other yearly expenses of the teams. Our goal is to increase the number of funded coaches for both teams and to limit the fund-raising and financial contributions of the student athletes. Also, the Don Bunce Fund commemorates the life, rugby accomplishments and contributions of former Stanford quarterback, rugger and team physician Dr. Don Bunce, providing discretionary funds for the coaches to improve the experience of the Stanford Rugby athletes.
