Stanford vs Santa Clara:
Stanford: 31 Opponent: 26
On Saturday, November 11th, 2006, the Stanford Men's Rugby 1st XV defeated Santa Clara 1st XV 31-26 in a game that showcased phenomenal play by returners and rookies on both sides of the ball.
The Stanford starting lineup was as follows:
1. Matt Tiffin 2. ? 3. Alex Shih 4. Kylie 5. Chris Aylward 6. Taualai Fonoti 7. Josiah Hall 8. Cordel Robbin-Coker 9. Sid Ouyang 10. Jon Hofius 11. Enno 12. David Diaz 13. Mike Velcich 14. Preston 15. Andy Scheer
Stanford dominated the first half of play, taking a 17-0 lead at half time with tries by Hofius, an unidentifiable rugger in a gigantic pileup on the try-line, and Enno. While the time of possession was split relatively evenly between the two sides, Stanford dominated on scrums and on loose balls in the breakdown.
With the second half of play came many substitutions by Stanford, as well as more inspired play by Santa Clara. After a 5 minute try-line standoff, Santa Clara came away with their first points, however Stanford quickly countered with another long run on the right wing by Enno, marking his second try. Santa Clara's big men soon scored again, however, bringing the score to 24-14 with 18 minutes to play.
The sides alternated tries (#10 substitute Nick Dantzker for Stanford) down to the last minute, as Santa Clara scored to come within a try, 31-26, as time expired.
The referees awarded Stanford #1 Matt Tiffin as the Man of the Match after hearing the opposing Santa Clara frontliner ask to be subbed out before half time thanks to Tiffin's terrific scrum work.
Also, stellar play by returners such as Tiffin and Hofius was complemented by the highlight-reel runs of freshman Enno on his two tries, both of which were longer than 30 meters.
This victory brings Stanford's record to 2-0.
On the B-side, Stanford defeated Santa Clara 41 - 7. We led the entire game, however, the first half of play was considerably cleaner than the second. Our lineouts and scrums are going much better than they did this time last year, while the backline still has some kinks to iron out on the outside. Overall, it was a good showing that also demonstrated where we can improve.
