On January 28, Stanford defeated Chico State 18-17 in a match as close as the score would suggest. Chico lead 10 to 5 at halftime, after converting a try as time expired. Chico won the time-of-possession battle, but the Stanford tight five dominated the Chico pack, winning scrum after scrum. As the game wore on, Chico wore down, providing Stanford's backs more space to run. Chico took a 17-15 lead into the last 4 minutes, but Stanford earned a penalty with 2 minutes remaining and fullback Mike Velcich converted the kick to give Stanford the final 18-17 victory.
