Stanford White v. Santa Clara 1st XV
Stanford White used a combination of speed, strong scrummaging, and opportunism to score a 34-20 victory over the Santa Clara 1st XV. Despite conceding possession and field position for much of the first half, Stanford White was able to capitalize on Santa Clara mistakes and several dynamic line breaks to take a 22-20 lead into halftime. In the second half, Stanford’s superior fitness and hardened resolution on defense contained the Santa Clara attack and held the Broncos to zero second-half points. Stanford will look to build off this opening win and continue to improve in the weeks ahead.
Santa Clara voted Aaron Smith (outside center, 2008) the Stanford Man of the Match.
Points scored: Jon Hofius (2 tries for 10 points), Aaron Smith (1 try and 2 conversions for 9 points), Brad Bachelder (1 try for 5 points), Stephen Foster (1 try for 5 points), and Trevor Grace (1 try for 5 points).
Stanford Red v. Santa Clara 2nd XV
Stanford Red exploited its speed advantage to win comfortably over the Santa Clara 2nd XV. With several players getting their first experience in XVs, the Stanford Red squad scored an impressive 36-5 victory. Stanford looks to build off of both wins next weekend against UCSB.
