Stanford 1st XV v. Chico State 1st XV
In its first game of the NorCal League Season, Stanford fell to Chico State by a score of 26-14. Building off their preseason games, the Cardinal came out with a strong performance in the first half. Chico controlled the ball for the first few minutes of the game, but Stanford was able to prevent any large gains with sturdy defense around the fringe. After pinning Chico deep in their own territory, Stanford got on the board when rookie fullback Stephen Foster (2010) scooped up a short clearance kick from the Chico flyhalf, attacked the sideline, and used nifty footwork to beat the last defender to score in the corner. Stanford flyhalf Trevor Haas (2010) added the conversion for a 7-0 Stanford lead with about 30 minutes left in the first half.
The middle portion of the first half saw the two teams battle back and forth for field position with neither team finding much success on offense. Finally, in the last ten minutes of the first half Stanford turned on the pressure barely failing to make the try zone on several occasions. This pressure finally paid off for the Cardinal with no time left in the first half when scrumhalf Brad Bachelder (2008) took a quick tap from a Chico penalty near midfield and linked up with flanker Ian Abernathy (2008) and outside center Riley English (2010) to take the ball within ten meters of the Chico line. There, patient pick-and-gos by the Cardinal pack pushed over a try scored by Pat Danahy (Co-Terminal MA 2008) and Haas again converted for a 14-0 halftime lead for the Cardinal.
Unfortunately, Stanford was unable to carryover its success on the scoreboard to the second half. Down 14 points, Chico came out with a sense of urgency and quickly cut the Stanford lead in half when their #13 was able to break through the line on a Stanford missed tackle off a lineout in the Cardinal 22M area (Chico #5 good on the conversion). Stanford was able to regroup after this quick try and continued to put Chico under pressure deep in their territory. Tactical substitutions Chris Riklin (2011) and Dante Dicicco (2011) at prop and flanker brought new energy to the Cardinal ten minutes into the half and Stanford was unlucky not to come away with points on several instances during the first part of the second half.
After controlling much of the territory up to the midpoint of the second half, Stanford conceded the tying try to Chico when a missed tackle on the Chico defensive side of the field led to a long run by the Chico #6. This run put the Stanford players on their back feet and after recycling the ball quickly, the Chico State flyhalf was able to touch it down with Chico #5 adding the conversion to make it 14-14 with about 20 minutes to play. A huge hit on the ensuing kickoff by Stanford captain and second-row Pat Danahy had Stanford’s home crowd back into it. Chico was able to retain the ball on several runs off the ruck and when Stanford failed to realign properly, Chico exploited a missed tackle by Stanford on the outside to score on an offload and grab a 19-14 lead (#5 missed the conversion) with 18 minutes to play.
The last quarter of the game saw the Cardinal desperately try to get the tying and possible go-ahead score as several times they pushed the ball inside the Chico State 22M area, but were unable to finish off their possession. After English was yellow carded for holding on with under seven minutes left, the desperation grew for Stanford, but the Cardinal was unable to mount a successful drive into Chico territory. Chico sealed the victory with a try from their #13 after Stanford stopped several pick-and-go attempts following a lineout within 10M of the Stanford goal line. The Cardinal will continue to work hard over the upcoming winter break and look to find success in 2008.
